Lollie's Final Paper

Page history last edited by Katie Lollie 10 years ago

I would like to analyze the fairy tale "Cinderella" for my final paper. The theme that I would like to specifically look at is the role of the female protagonist (and how she transforms throughout different versions), and how these changes reflect changes in society.

My three scholarly sources for my paper:

cinderella makers.pdf

Saving Cinderella.pdf

tangled up in blue.pdf

As I get closer to the project, I'm feeling torn because I have thought of many great ideas concerning using the same topic but with the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast." I have always loved this fairy tale, and I also watch the CW show Beauty and the Beast every week, which is an adaptation of the fairy tale. I have a lot of insight on how the fairy tale has changed throughout different cultures and time periods, and I think it could make a great paper. What do you think I should do?

If I were to do Beauty and the Beast, here would be three sources for that. (So I wouldn't be behind)

You've come a long way Beauty (and beast).pdf

The Tale with a thousand faces- Beauty and the Beast.pdf

Romancing the plot-Beauty and the Beast.pdf

I ended up choosing "Beauty and the Beast"

Working thesis:

Throughout different adaptations of the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast," such as in the movie Beastly, the role of the Beast in the story often transforms in order to reflect the ideals of the society in which the story was created. These transformations are especially important regarding the external situation surrounding the Beast, his responsibility for his own "re-humanization," and the Beast's changing relationship with Beauty, because they demonstrate what is important at that time period as well as what is expected of the male gender.

These look like great sources (and a great topic)!

Great working thesis. As you revise, think about specific ways the protagonist has evolved (i.e. her responsibilities, her personality… or is it primarily things around her that have evolved, such as her family and magic helpers/lack of helpers).
