Name: Marie Deschuytter , er7192@wayne.edu

Major: French

Interests: sports (fencing), literature

Final Project:

I would like to discuss the way fairy tales relate to our own desires. It is interesting to see how basically in each fairy tale something happens because a character really 'wants' something. I don't know yet what fairy tale I will pick, since there are a lot of possibilities.

Fairy Tale: "Snow White", since it displays different kinds of desires.

Thesis: Fairy tales have such a strong effect on us since they consist of the same desires we know as humans; we can relate to them. Writers take advantage of the psychological factors of that.  While the stories might seem to encourage us to give in to our desires, they actually break them down, especially feminist desires. Scholarships criticize this and the consequences of it.

Fairy Tales in Visual Media:

I would like to use 'Snow White' for this project. I am planning on using an advertisement for perfume: 'Poison by Christian Dior'.

Since I am not able to upload the picture here (When I edit the page I can paste the picture, but when I save it, the image disappears again.) I will just post a link to the picture here.

Exploring desire in fairy tales is a great theme! Tatar (who edits our fairy tale collection) really emphasizes desire (and psychology) in her analysis. Both Snow White and Rapunzel emphasize hunger (as a stand-in for other kinds of desire).
